In the 8th century, Slovenia was part of the larger Slavic polity of Carantania. Subjugated to the Frankish Kingdom, by the end of the Middle Ages it was partitioned into the Duchy of Carniola, the County of Gorizia, the Margraviate of Istria, with other parts of Slovenia belonging to the Duchy of Styria and the Duchy of Carinthia. From the 14th century onward these territories were under the rule of the Habsburg Dynasty. From the 14th to the 17th century an attempt was undertaken to combine Carinthia, Carniola, Styria, Gorizia and the Austrian parts of Istria to Inner Austria.
In 1809 Austria ceded Carinthia, Carniola, Gorizia, Istria and Trieste to France; together with parts of Croatia and most of Dalmatia, they formed the (French) Illyrian Provinces (until 1813).
Again under Austrian rule since 1813, from 1816 to 1849 Carinthia, Carniola, Gorizia, Istria and Trieste formed the Kingdom of Illyria (under the Habsburg Dynasty, which ruled from Vienna). In 1849 the Kingdom of Illyria was dissolved in the Austrian Littoral, Carniola and Carinthia.
Following the Austrian defeat in World War I, most of Slovenia was ceded by Austria to the newly-formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (SHS). Much of the Austrian Littoral went to Italy. In parts of Carinthia a plebiscite was held (1920) as to to which country the plebiscite area was to belong to. In 1929 SHS was renamed Yugoslavia.
Following World War II, Italy ceded territory formerly belonging to the Austrian Littoral to Yugoslavia. Within Yugoslavia, the Republic of Slovenia was established. In 1991, the Republic of Slovenia declared independence.
