Bhutan since 1968



In 1968 the first CABINET was formed. In 1971 Bhutan joined the UNITED NATIONS. In 1972, King JIGME SINGYE WANGCHUK ascended to the throne. In 1974, tourists were allowed to enter the country for the first time.
In 1986 a citizenship law was passed that branded the descendants of Nepali immigrants as alien residents. Later, the use of Nepali as language of instruction was forbidden; pressure applied on the Nepali community caused many to flee (c. 80,000 or c. 10 % of the total population of Bhutan). In 1990 violence erupted among the Nepalese residents in Bhutan.
In 1998 the country became a CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY; in 1999 TV began broadcasting.

The Bhutan National Olympic Committee was formed in 1983, and recognized by IOC the same year.
