Administration : The administration of Bihar from 1971 to 1977 and from 1980 to 1990 by INC-led governments, from 1977-1980 by JP-led governments, from 1990-1997, briefly in 2000 and sonce 2005 by a JD-led government, from 1997-2000 and from 2000 to 2005 by a RJD-led government.

Annals : 1972 : state elections held; INC formed government
1974 : student trouble in Bihar; floods in northern Bihar (BBoY 1975)
1975 : extensive damage to crops from floods in Bihar (BBoY 1976)
1976 : accident at Chas Nala Colliery in Bihar killed over 300 (BBoY 1977)
1977 : state elections held; JP formed government
1978-1980 : anti-Muslim riots at Jamshedpur, Bihar
1978 : attacks on scheduled caste groups in Belchhi in Bihar; Patna badly inundated (BBoY 1979)
1980 : state elections held; INC formed government
1980 : caste clashes in Bihar (BBoY 1981)
1981 : anti-Muslim riots at Biharsharif, Bihar (BBoY 1982)
1982 : begin of Naxalite violence in Bihar
1985 : state elections held; INC formed government
1986 : anti-Muslim riots at Newada (Bihar)
1986 : train plunged into river in Bihar (BBoY 1987)
1988 : earthquake struck Bihar (BBoY 1989)
1989 : anti-Muslim riots at Bhagalpur (Bihar) (BBoY 1990)
1989 : demand for a separate state of Jharkhand raised (BBoY 1990)
1990 : state elections held; JD formed government
1995 : state elections held; JD formed government
2000 : Jharkhand separated from Bihar

Social History : In 1971 the population of Bihar was 56.3 million, in 1981 69.8 million, in 1991 86.3 million, in 2001 82.8 million (Jharkhand was partitioned in 2000).
The Statesman's Yearbook, based on censi, gives the literacy rate of Uttar Pradesh in 1991 26 %, in 2001 47.53 % (60.32 % for men). In 2001, 82.4 % of the population were Hindu.
