History of India 1878-1918

French India 1815-1878

The concise descriptions of the history of French India / Pondicherry report nothing on the period between 1815 and 1878. French India was a remote colony, consisting of 5 scattered, tiny possessions (Pondicherry, Karikal, Chandernagar, Mahe, Yanaon) which were, at best, of secondary political and economic importance, and which offered little prospect of development, as Britain took control of the hinterland.
The opening of the Suez Canal (constructed by Frenchman Ferdinand de Lesseps) in 1869 considerably improved communication with the motherland.
