French India 1878-1918



French India was given an ELECTIVE GENERAL COUNCIL which had advisory function to the governor. In 1893 the first POSTAGE STAMPS were issued for the French Establishments in India (Etablissements Francaises dans l'Inde). In 1883, Pondicherry had 140,945 inhabitants, Karikal 94,055 inhabitants, Mahe in 1881 8,106 inhabitants, Yanaon in 1885 4,266 inhabitants, Chandernagar in 1885 25,842 inhabitants (Meyers). In 1901 the population of French India numbered 273,185.
