French India 1918-1939

Within the French colonial Empire, French India functioned as a historical reminiscence of an ambitious 18th century colonial policy. The colony did not have much of a hinterland, was economically of secondary importance, had little prospect of development (and the hinterland in effect was controlled by the British).
When, in the process of the Indian freedom movement, SRI AUROBINDO and others fled to French Indian territory in 1910, the administration of British India demanded their extradition (1918). The administration of French India refused to comply.
In 1925 French India introduced registration of motor vehicles.

In 1936, all of French India had a population of 299,000, of these the territory of Pondicherry 176,205, Karikal 59,224, Chandernagar 28,812, Mahe 12,936, Yanaon 5,220. The largest city was capital Pondicherry with 48,571. In 1935, French India had 38 km of railroad. The budget in 1936 amounted to 18.99 million Rupees, in 1937 to 25.60 million Rupees, in 1938 to 31.87 million Rupees.
