Gujarat, 1960-1971


Establishment of the State : In 1960, Bombay State was split into the States of Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Administration : From 1962 to 1974 Gujarat was administrated by an Indian National Congress (INC) led government

Annals : 1960 : Bombay State split into Gujarat and Maharashtra; Ahmedabad capital of Gujarat, Gujarati state language
1961 : oil was discovered at Anklesvar in Gujarat (BBoY 1962)
1962 : state election held, INC formed government
1967 : state election held, INC formed government
1969 : Hindu-Muslim violence; estimates range between 400 and 2,500 dead
1970 : capital moved from Ahmedabad to Gandhinagar

Social History : In 1961 the population of Gujarat was 20.6 million, in 1971 26.6 million. The Statesman's Yearbook, based on the census of 1971, gives the literacy rate for Gujarat in 1971 as 35.8 %; in 1971 90.4 % of the population were Hindus, 8.5 % Muslims.
