Mysore State, 1956-1973


Establishment of the State : In 1956 the State of Mysore, was enlarged by annexing Coorg and parts of Madras, Hyderabad and Bombay States into the princely state of Mysore, thus turning it into the unified state of the Kannada-speaking people. Bangalore was chosen as capital.

Administration : From 1956 to 1983 Mysore was administrated by an Indian National Congress (INC) led government

Annals : 1956 : Mysore State enlarged by annexation of Coorg and of parts of Madras, Hyderabad and Bombay State; capital Bangalore; Kannada adopted as official language
1957 : state election; INC formed government
1961 : village self-government introduced in Mysore State (BBoY 1962)
1962 : state election; INC formed government
1967 : state election; INC formed government
1972 : state election; INC formed government


Social History : In 1961 the population of Mysore was 23.5 million, in 1971 29.2 million. The Statesman's Yearbook, based on the census of 1971, gives the literacy rate for Mysore in 1971 as 49 %; in 1961 87.2 % of the population were Hindus, 9.8 % Muslims.
