1910-1950 History of Nepal since 1990

Nepal 1950-1990

In 1947 India gained her independence from Britain, and became a parliamentary democracy. A NEPALESE CONGRESS PARTY was founded; a 1950 revolt caused constitutional change : a CABINET was introduce, with whom the Prime Minister (of the Rana family) had to share power. In 1959, CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY was introduced, a constitution promulgated, a parliament introduced. A LAND REFORM was implemented (1962), steps undertaken to abolish legal discrimination based on the caste system. In 1951 the country was opened for foreign visitors.
In consequence of the Chinese invasion of Tibet, Tibetan refugees fled to Nepal. A 1956 treaty with China formally ended the payment of tribute by Tibet; all Nepalese troops left Tibet by the following year. In 1961, the border to China was fixed by treaty.
In the 1960s, Nepal, especially Kathmandu, attracted many western tourists, notably Hippies.
In the 1980s ethnic Nepalese refugees whose ancestors had migrated to Bhutan arrived, expelled from that country.
Relations to India were uneasy; the closure of the border by India in 1989 effectively placed Nepal under an economic blockade.

The population rose from 8,182,000 in 1950 to 9,327,000 in 1960, to 11,416,000 in 1970, to 14,630,000 in 1980, to 18,110,000 in 1990 - more than double the figure of 1950.
The Nepal National Olympic Committee was formed in 1962, and recognized by IOC in 1963.
