Orissa since 1971


Administration : The position of chief minister of Orissa, from 1971 to 1977 by the Indian National Congress (INC), from 1977 to 1980 by the Janata Party (JP), from 1980 to 1999 and 1999-2000 by the INC, briefly in 1999 and since 2000 by the Biju People's Party (BJD)

Annals : 1971 : state elections were held in Orissa; an INC-led administration was formed.
1972 : Orissa was hit by a typhoon
1974 : state elections were held in Orissa; an INC-led administration was formed.
1977 : state elections were held in Orissa; an JP-led administration was formed.
1980 : state elections were held in Orissa; an INC-led administration was formed.
1980 : People's War Group (Naxalite) established in Srikakulam, Orissa (BORR)
1984 : Orissa State Academy established
1985 : state elections were held in Orissa; an INC-led administration was formed.
1988 : the Dalai Lama visited Orissa
1990 : state elections were held in Orissa; an INC-led administration was formed.
1993 : an administrative reform increased the number of districts to 30
1995 : state elections were held in Orissa; an INC-led administration was formed.
2000 : state elections were held in Orissa; an BJD-led administration was formed.
2000 : severe drought
2001 : severe floods
2002 : severe drought
2003 : severe floods
2004 : state elections were held in Orissa; an BJD-led administration was formed.
Social History : In 1971 the population of Orissa was 21.9 million, in 1981 26.2 million, in 1991 31.6 million, in 2001 36.7 million.
The Statesman's Yearbook, based on censi, gives the literacy rate of Orissa as 21.7 % in 1971, 34.12 % in 1981, in 1991 49.09 %, in 2001 63.61 % (75.95 % for men). In 2001, 94.7 % of the population were Hindu, 2.1 % Christian, 1.8 % Muslim.
