Sri Lanka, since 1994



In 1993 Sri Lanka's President Premadasa was assassinated. Peace talks were held in 1994-1995; the Tamil Tigers changed their strategy, targetted political and cultural centers in the south with terrorist attacks (capital Colombo in 1996, a Buddhist temple in 1998); in 1999 they succeeded in wounding President Kumaratunga in another assassination attempt. In 2001 LTTE fighters stormed Colombo international airport, destroying much of Air Sri Lanka's fleet of planes and some of the airport facilities before withdrawing.
In December 2004, Sri Lanka was hit hard by a major Tsunami, who struck both government and rebel held areas with deadly force.
Sri Lanka joined WTO in 1995.
