Tamil Nadu since 1969


Administration : The position of chief minister of Madras State/Tamil Nadu, from 1967 to 1976 by the DMK from 1977 to 1988 by the AIADMK, from 1989 to 1991 by the DMK, from 1991 to 1996 by the AIADMK, from 1996 to 2001 by the DMK, from 2001 to 2006 by the AIADMK, since 2006 by the DMK.

Annals : 1969 : Madras State renamed Tamil Nadu
1971 : state election held; DMK formed government
1972 : All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) founded (split off DMK)
1976 : drought in Tamil Nadu (BBoY 1977)
1977 : state election held; AIADMK formed government
1978 : scheduled caste groups (former untouchables) victims of a violent attack in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu (BBoY 1979)
1980 : state election held; AIADMK formed government
1981 : "The organized conversion of people of the scheduled classes (former outcastes) to Islam in Tamil Nadu evoked concern and complaints that Middle Eastern money was being used" (BBoY 1982)
1983 : begin of the civil war in Sri Lanka; it caused an influx of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees
1983 : nuclear power station at Kalpakkam operational (BBoY 1984)
1984 : state election held; AIADMK formed government
1987-1990 : Indian forces, as peacekeepers, involved in Sri Lankan Civil War
1988 : president's rule introduced in Tamil Nadu, following split in governing AIADMK (BBoY 1989)
1989 : state election held; DMK formed government
1990 : camp for Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka set up at Vellore, Tamil Nadu
1991 : state election held; AIADMK formed government
1991 : INC leader and ex-PM Rajiv Gandhi, while campaigning in Tamil Nadu, assassinated by an LTTE suicide bomber
1994 : act passed which reserves 69 % of posts in state service to scheduled and other backward castes (BBoY 1995)
1996 : state election held; DMK formed government
1996 : Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) split from Indian National Congress (INC); power base of TMC in Tamil Nadu
1996 : Madras renamed into Chennai
2001 : state election held; AIADMK formed government
2004 : costal region affected by Tsunami
2006 : state election held; DMK formed government

Social History : In 1971 the population of Tamil Nadu was 41.1 million, in 1981 48.2 million, in 1991 55.8 million, in 2001 62.1 million.
The Statesman's Yearbook, based on censi, gives the literacy rate of Tamil Nadu as 39.39 % in 1971, 46.82 % in 1981, in 1991 62.66 %, in 2001 73.47 % (82.33 % for men). In 1991, 88.67 % of the population were Hindu, 5.69 Christian, 5.47 % Muslim.
