Within the Republic of India, Andhra Pradesh was formed in 1956 by merging the Telugu-speaking regions of Madras State (the successor of Madras Presidency) and of Hyderabad State (the successor of the Nizamate of Hyderabad).
The separation of Telangana from Andhra Pradesh, and its establishment as a separate state, is presently under discussion. If successful, it would not only deprive Andhra Pradesh of a large part of its territory and population, but also require it to move its capital, as the city of Hyderabad is located in the region of Telangana.
