In 1914, Britain and Tibet agreed on the border between Tibet and Assam (British India), the so-called McMahon Line. In the same year, the North-East Frontier Tracts were carved out of the territory of Assam.
Upon the independence of India, NEFT was allocated to Assam. In 1951, North-Eastern Frontier Agency (NEFA) was established.
During the Sino-Indian War 1962, much of NEFA was temporarily occupied by PRC forces. While these forces withdrew, the PRC maintains her territorial claim over Arunachal Pradesh. In 1972, NEFA was separated from Assam and, established as the State of Arunachal Pradesh within the Republic of India.
