The Province of Himachal Pradesh was formed in 1948. With the Union of India being transformed into the Republic of India in 1950, Himachal Province was transformed into Himachal Pradesh (State). A number of Princely States merged into it in 1954. For the history prior to 1948/1954 see under Punjab respectively the Princely States linked below.
