Kerala State was established in 1956 (within the Republic of India) when Travancore-Cochin (formed in 1949 of the two former Kingdoms of Travancore and Cochin) was merged with Madras Presidency's Malabar District, and renamed Kerala.
Besides West Bengal, Kerala is the Indian state where the Communist Party played the most prominent role. Population as of 2011 33 million; language Malayalam.
