First posted on December 5th 2005, last revised on May 29th 2010

Madhya Pradesh was formed in 1950 out of the Central Provinces and Berar and several princely states. In 1956 Madhya Pradesh ceded the Vidarbha region (southern Central Provinces and Berar) to Maharashtra, and annexed Madhya Bharat, Vindya Pradesh and Bhopal. In 2000 the eastern region of Chhattisgarh seceded to form a state of its own within the Republic of India.
