When India became independent in 1947, the Bombay Presidency (minus Sindh, established as a separate province in 1936 and now joining Pakistan) was converted into Bombay State; it annexed several Princely States, a.o. Kolhapur.
Parts of Hyderabad (Aurangabad Division) and of Madhya Pradesh (Vidarbha) were annexed into Bombay State. In 1960 Bombay State was split into Gujarat and Maharashtra, states within the Republic of India.
