At the outset of the first Anglo-Burmese War, Manipur was occupied by Burma (since 1774). The exiled Raja of Manipur, with British aid but in command of the operation, liberated his country. In 1891 Britain formally established a protectorate over Manipur, which thus became a princely state.
Manipur joined the Union of India in 1949. Manipur was part of Assam State 1949-1956, Union Territory from 1956 to 1972, is a separate state within the Republic of India since 1972.
