In sources of the 19th century referred to as the Lushai (Looshai) Hills. In 1871-1872 and 1889-1890 the British undertook two expeditions in response to tribal raids. The Lushai Hills were allocated to Bengal (Assam), the eastern region of Chin, also inhabited by Zomi, was allocated to Burma.
When India became independent in 1947, the Lushai Hills were part of Assam. In 1987 Mizoram became a separate state within the Republic of India.
