For the history until 1752, see The Portuguese Indian Empire 1505-1752
In 1661 King Charles II. of
England married Constance of Bragança, Princess of Portugal. This marriage established Englands "oldest alliance" and, for the Portuguese colonies in Asia, provided security against attacks from the V.O.C.
Portugal was able to hold on to the remainder of its colonial Empire in Asia, mainly Goa, Daman, Diu, Macau.
In 1961, forces of the Republic of India occupied the remaining Portuguese outposts on the Indian subcontinent, and India annexed them in spite of Portuguese protests. Goa, Daman and Diu became an Indian Territory; Dadra and Nagar Haveli already had become one in 1954. In 1987 the State of Goa (within the Republic of India) was established, leaving the Territory of Daman and Diu.
Portugal held on to Portuguese Timor until 1974 (to Indonesia), to Macau until 1997 (to PR China).
