During British rule of India, the territory of modern Rajasthan, then referred to as Rajputana, consisted of the small British Province of Ajmer-Merwara (a separate province since 1871, previously part of Northwestern Provinces / United Provinces of Agra and Oudh), 18 princely states and 2 chieftainships. Following India's independence, in a complex process lasting from 1948 to 1956, these territories merged into the state of Rajasthan.
