Established in 1831 as the Northwestern Provinces (recent acquisitions of the Bengal Presidency) which at that time included the Central Provinces (separated in 1861) and Ajmer-Merwara (separated in 1871). Annexation of Oudh (Awadh) in 1858. Now officially named the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, the name "Northwestern Provinces" continued to be used.
Upon independence of India in 1947, U.P. (the United Provinces) were renamed into Uttar Pradesh (so that the abbreviation conveniently could be maintained). A number of minor princely states were absorbed. Uttar Pradesh is the Republic of India's most populous state, even after Uttaranchal (now Uttarakhand) was split off in 2000.
