Cisalpine republic, 1798-1802

French troops occupied northern central Italy in 1796, establishing the LOMBARD REPUBLIC which soon was reoccupied by the allies. When the French again took control of the area, they established the TRANSPADAN REPUBLIC (1796, the areas of Milano and Mantua), the CISPADAN REPUBLIC (1797, Modena and the Emiliana).
In 1798, both republics, were merged to form the CISALPINE REPUBLIC, capital Milano. It was reconquered by Russian troops in 1799 and retaken by Napoleon in 1800.
When Russia, disgruntled over the British occupation of Malta, withdrew from the Second Coalition (1799), France gained control of Northern Italy, and the situation within the Cisalpine Republic became politically more stable. French-style political reforms were implemented.
In 1802, the Cisalpine Republic was renamed ITALIAN REPUBLIC, in 1805 enlarged by Venice, Istria, Dalmatia and the Ionian Islands, and transformed into the KINGDOM OF ITALY.
