Malta 1815-1848

The VIENNA CONGRESS confirmed British possession of Malta. The island was ruled by a governor. The Maltese population, which had appealed for British protection in 1800, had no say in the administration of their country. In 1835 the COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENT was created, consisting of appointed members only.
In the 1830es many new elementary schools were established. In 1839 PRESS FREEDOM was introduced.
