Malta 1848-1887

In 1849 Malta was given a CONSTITUTION according to which the COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENT was to be composed of appointed (10) and elected (8) members.
The first, horse-pulled OMNIBUS began to operate in 1856, the first railway in 1883. The opening of the SUEZ CANAL in 1869 increased the importance of Malta as a stopover en route to India and the Far East. In 1860 the British Postal Service issued the first POSTAGE STAMPS for Malta.
