History of Italy 1860-1906

Republic of San Marino, 1815-1860

The VIENNA CONGRESS of 1815 recognized the independence of San Marino. In 1825 and in 1853 attempts were made by the Papal State to annex San Marino. Since the 19th century, San Marino experienced EMIGRATION.
After the Roman Revolution of 1848 had failed, San Marino granted refuge to GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI and his consort ANITA GARIBALDI. Both the Papal State and Austria were displeased.
