In 1377, Appenzell established its independence from the Prince-abbey of St. Gallen, reaffirmed
in the Appenzell Wars 1401-1429.
In 1411 Appenzell became an ally of the Swiss Confederation; in 1513 it joined as full member. The introduction of the Reformation 1522 and following created two religious communities, a Protestasnt and a Catholic one. In 1597 Appenzell split in two, (Protestant) Ausserrhoden and (Catholic) Innerrhoden. In 1798 the two were joined to form the Canton of Appenzell in the Helvetic Republic (-1803). In 1803 two half-cantons, Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Appenzell Innerrhoden, were reestablished, within the Swiss Confederation. Appenzell Innerrhoden still practices direct democracy (Landsgemeinde).
