The city of Rijeka (until 1919/1947 in sources mostly referred to as Fiume (Ital.), Reka (older Slavic spelling) or St. Veit (German))
in 1719 was declared a free port. The region around Fiume was referred to as the Hungarian (Croatian) Littoral. Administratively,
Fiume belonged to Modrus County, within the Kingdom of Hungary (1867-1918). Fiume
became Hungary's main port and experienced urban growth. From 1920 to 1924, Fiume was a Free City, largely because Italy and the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes could not agree over who would get the city. In 1924, Fiume was annexed by the Kingdom of Italy. In 1947 Italy ceded Fiume, now called Rijeka, to Yugoslavia; it was annexed by the Yugoslav republic of Croatia.
