The city of Fribourg was founded in 1157. From 1452 to 1477 under the Dukes of Savoy; independent since 1477.
Fribourg joined the Swiss Confederation in 1481. Fribourg was opposed to the Reformation.
In alliance with Bern, in 1536 Fribourg conquered Vaud.
In 1555 acquisition of the larger part of the County of Gruyeres.
Because of the Reformation in control in Lausanne, the bishops of Lausanne took up residence in Fribourg 1613.
The Jesuits arrived in 1580; Fribourg joined the Catholic cantons in the
Borromaean or Spanish alliance 1586-1587. 1798-1803 part of the Helvetic Republic; from 1803 onward of the
Swiss Confederation. In 1798 briefly a secessionist Rhodan Republic (Canton Sarine et Broye)
consisting of territory of Vaud and of Fribourg) existed; on March 29th 1798 the French government declared Fribourg capital,
thus ending the brief secession.
