The Duchy of Modena and Reggio was established in 1456. In 1796 its territory was merged with the Romagna to form the
Cispadane Republic, which in 1797 merged with the Transpadane Republic to form
the Cisalpine Republic, which in 1802 was renamed Italian Republic, in 1805
reconstituted as Kingdom of Italy. In 1815 the Duchy of Modena was reconstituted; in 1859 it was annexed by the
