Belgium 1969-1990



In 2002/2004 Belgium introduced the Euro currency. In 2003 the Belgian government was opposed to the invasion of Iraq and did not join the Coalition of the Willing. In a 2005 referendum, the Belgian populace approved the EU constitution.
In 2002 Belgium decriminalized euthanasia. In 2003 the phaseout of the existing nuclear reactors was decided upon and a ban on the construction of new ones was put in place. In 2003, same sex marriages were legalized, Belgium being the second country in Europe to do so (after the Netherlands).
King Baudouin died in 1993; he was succeeded by his brother Albert II.
