Originally part of the County of Flanders, in 1187 the city of Tournai was given a charter granting her autonomy within the
Kingdom of France. The territory subsequently acquired and administrated by the city was
called the Tournaisis or Tournesis. In 1314 the city was annexed by France, and in 1340 her privileges (autonomous status) were restored. In 1521/1522 city and territory were conquered by Emperor Charles V. and added to the Habsburg-Burgundian complex of territories (the Netherlands), as well as the Holy Roman Empire. When Charles V. retired in 1556, Tournaisis with the other territories of the Netherlands was allocated to Spain. During the Protestant Reformation, Tournai was a center of early Calvinism ("the Geneva of the North"); also the Counterreformation established a stronghold here, and prevailed. From 1579/1584 to 1668 Tournaisis was part of the Spanish Netherlands, from 1668 to 1713 part of the Kingdom of France, from 1713 to 1715 of the Austrian Netherlands. From 1795 to 1813 part of France, in 1815 it became part of the Kingdom of the United Netherlands. The territory of the former Tournesis was partitioned by the Provinces of Hainaut and West Flanders (with a tiny part in the south still belonging to France, Departement Nord.
