History of Northern Africa Açores, 1660-1815

Açores until 1660

Mentioned on an Italian map of 1351, the Açores were uninhabited when found by the Portuguese in 1427. They were settled from 1432 onward. In 1546, PONTA DELGADA was elevated to the rank of a city.
Between 1580 and 1640, Portugal was just another one of the Spanish Habsburg's many possessions. For the Açores this had some advantages, as the Spanish Treasure Fleet now regularly stopped at the Açores. It also made the Açores attractive for pirate raids.
