Açores since 1974

In 1974 a group of progressive, leftist-leaning officers staged a coup, ending Portugal's old dictatorship. The country's colonies were released into independence. The Açores were granted far-reaching autonomy.
Portugal's entry into the EEC boosted the islands' economy. The islands population amounted to 236,500 in 1992.
