Mauritania 1920-1939

In 1920, Mauritania was separated from Senegal to form a distinct colony within French West Africa. However, the seat of Mauritania's administration continued to be in SAINT LOUIS (Senegal) until 1957.
Although France claimed all of Mauritania since 1903, French rule until 1934 was indirect, using the emirs of Adrar, Trarza etc, as intermediaries.
