Western Sahara in Precolonial Times, before 1884

A very inhospitable stretch of desert, with the lowest population density of all of Africa. CAPE BOJADOR was for centuries the furthest point known to Europeans on the West Adfrican coast.
The Portuguese went beyond Cape Bojador since 1434, but were not interested in this seemingly unpopulated stretch of coast. This changed only in 1884, when the Spanish claimed the area.
