For the history since 1968, see Morocco Ifni 1957-1969 Ifni 1934-1957 When Morocco was partitioned in 1912, the allocation of Ifni and environs to Spain (Spain claimed it to be the site of Santa Cruz de la Mar Pequena, a Canary Islands outpost on the mainland in the early 15th century; Morocco recognized this claim in 1860, but disputed the location) was confirmed; administratively it was placed under the Spanish Sahara, as was Cabo Juby (the Southern Protectorate). Spain only proceeded to occupy Ifni in 1934. (French) Morocco regained independence in 1957; Spain ceded Cabo Juby / the Southern Protectorate in April 1958, but held on to Ifni until June 30th 1969.
