From the 16th century onward, Barka, A HREF = "xtripolitania.html">Tripolitania and Fezzan were tributary to the Ottoman Empire. In 1835, Barka and Tripolitania (with Fezzan) were turned into Ottoman provinces. In 1912 the Ottoman Empire ceded Barka (now called Cyrenaica) and Tripolitania (with Fezzan) to Italy. In 1932 Cyrenaica and Tripolitania (with Fezzan) were merged to form the Italian colony of Libya. In several border agreements signed by Italy with France and the United Kingdom, the territory of Libya was expanded.
In 1943 British forces occupied Cyrenaica and Tripolitania, French forces Fezzan-Ghadames. In 1951 reunited Libya was released into independence, as a kingdom. A coup d'etat in 1969 terminated the monarchy and introduced the republic. Since 1969, Muammar al Qaddafi rules Libya. Oil was found in Libya in the 1950es; Libya is the wealthiest country on the African continent.
