From 1559 to 1659 Morocco was split in two, the Sultanates of Marrakech and of Fez. Portugal held on to a number
of coastal towns. In 1659 the Sultanate of Fez conquered Marrakech and reunited the country. In 1684 Morocco retook Tangier from the English (who had gained it in 1661 from Portugal). Morocco, in the view of the west one of the Barbary Coast Pirate States, maintained her independence into the early 20th century. When France expanded her colony of Algeria, it took territory in the central Sahara which Morocco claimed to be hers, such as the oasis of Tuat. In 1912 Morocco was split; Spain gained Spanish Morocco (Rif, Ifni, southern Morocco), Tangier became an international city, France acquired the remainder, French Morocco. In 1942 U.S. troops landed in Morocco, terminating the control of the Vichy administration here. In 1956 Morocco was released into independence; most of Spanish Morocco was reannexed. In 1969 Ifni was reannexed. In 1975 Morocco annexed the larger part of the former Spanish Sahara. When Mauritania withdrew from her share of the Western Sahara, Morocco annexed this part as well. From 1975 to 1991 Morocco faced the resistance of the Polisario, which demanded independence for the Western Sahara and was supported by Algeria.
