The city of Oran was founded in 903. From 1082 to 1145 Oran belonged to the Almoravides.
From 1145 to 1238 Oran was part of the state of the Almohades with capital at Marrakech. From 1238 to 1509 it was part of the state of the Zianides with capital at Tlemcen.
The city of Oran was held by Spain 1509-1707, 1732-1792. Oran was part of the Pashalik of Algiers 1707-1732, 1792-1831.
From 1831 to 1962 Oran as part of the French colony of Algeria; since 1962 part of the independent Republic of Algeria.
