The Tripoli was a province of the Ottoman Empire 1551 to 1711, then held by the Karamanli Dynasty as the Regency of Tripoli 1711 to 1835 when Ottoman authority was restored. Barca/Barqah (Cyrenaica), nominally separate, de facto was treated as an appendix to the Elayet / Beylik / Vilayet of Tripoli.
In 1912, Tripoli was annexed by Italy and made part of the Italian colony of Libya.
