Marshall Islands

In 1885 German agents signed a treaty with local chieftains, according to which the latter would place their islands under German protection. The Marshall Islands, consisting of the Batak Group in the east and the Ralik Group in the west, overall 353 islands, have an area of aboyt 400 square km surface. Seat of the German administration was JALUIT. The main export product was COPRA.
German administration complained about almost constant rain (c. 300 rainy days per year).
In 1914, early in World War I, the Marshall Islands were occupied by Japanese forces.
