The Solomon Islands before 1850



Inhabited since abour 2,000 B.C.; modern population Melanesian. The first documented European visitor was Spaniard ALVARO DE MENDENA DE NEIRA (1568), who named the islands after the biblical king Solomon. Anglican missionaries arrived in the 1850es.
