Tonga (Western) Samoa
First posted on May 5th 2002, last revised on October 24th 2010

The Tripartite Convention 1899 (Britain, Germany, U.S.A.) allocated Tonga and Niue to Britain, while Samoa was partitioned by Germany (Western Samoa) and the U.S.A. (American Samoa). The U.S.A. received the smaller, but strategically more important part, as American Samoa contained the port of Tutuila.
Self-government formally was introduced in 1967. American Samoa continues to be U.S. territory.
