People coming from Tahiti first settled on the Cook Islands in the 6th century A.D. The existance of these islands
was known to Spanish navigators from the late 16th century onward. They were visited by James Cook in the 1770es;
the name "Cook Islands" first appears on maps of the 1820es. A British protectorate 1888-1901, a New Zealand
