British New Guinea Irian Jaya
First posted on May 18th 2010

In 1884 the Neuguinea-Konsortium Otto Finsch claimed the northeastern coast of New Guinea, together with the Bismarck Archipelago. The western half of New Guinea was annexed into the Dutch East Indies, the southeast became British New Guinea.
In 1899 the Neuguinea-Kompagnie ceded her assets to Germany.
Early in 1914, Deutsch Neuguinea was occupied by Australian troops. In 1919 Germany was deprived of her colonies, and the League of Nations entrusted the mandate over German New Guinea to Australia. From 1919 to 1945 the area was referred to as North-east New Guinea.
