Cook Islands Pitcairn
First posted on July 9th 2002, last revised on October 24th 2010

The islands belonging to French Polynesia were settled between the 4th and 9th century A.D. The European discovery took place between the early 16th and the late 18th century; Tahiti was found in 1767 and, having gained a reputation for hospitality, soon attracted more visitors, who were followed by Catholic and Protestant missionaries.
In 1842 France declared Tahiti and Tahuata a French protectorate; by 1889 this had been expanded to include all of French Polynesia, then called "Etablissements (Français) de l'Oceanie". In 1946 the Polynesians were granted full French citizenship and the Etablissements Français de l'Oceanie were elevated to French overseas territory. In 1946 the name was changed to French Polynesia. Autonomy was introduced in 1977 & 1984; the status was elevated to French overseas collectivity in 2004.
