Settled c. 2000 B.C.; first European navigator to visit the island was Magellan in 1521. Claimed by
Spain in 1565; colonial rule
established in 1668. Administratively the Ladrones or Marianas, of which Guam was the most important island, were under the
government of the (Spanish) Philippines.
Spain ceded Guam to the United States in 1898. In 1899 Spain sold the other islands belonging to the Marianas or Ladrones to Germany; see under Northern Mariana Islands.
