First settled c.300 B.C., further wave of settlement in the 11th century A.D. First contact with Europeans 1778 (James Cook).
Cook called the islands Sandwich Islands, a name which stuck with Hawaii throughout much of the 19th century. Politically fragmented at the time of James Cook's visit, the islands were united by 1810. The unified Kingdom of Hawai'i was internationally recognized as an independent political entity. European and American missionaries and plantation owners settled on Hawai'i. The latter brought in workers from China, Japan and Korea to work the plantations. Diseases brought in by foreigners, to which the native Hawai'ians were not accustomed, decimated the native population. The 1887 constitution tied the voting right to property rights, favouring the foreign plantation owners. Queen Lili'uokalani planned to introduce a new constitution, but in 1893 was ousted in a coup d'etat, and the Republic of Hawai'i was declared (1894). The new government was dominated by plantation owners. In 1898 Hawai'i was annexed by the U.S.A. and granted the status of a territory. In 1959 it was elevated to state. Timeline : Hawaii |
